How to Replace a Gas Lift in your Chair – Step by Step
Share
Replacing a worn-out gas lift is a quick and cost-effective way to restore comfort without buying a new chair. Here’s how to do it:
1. Turn the chair upside down
Lay it gently on its side or flip it over to access the base.
2. Remove the base (the star-shaped legs)
Grip the base and gently tap it upwards — it should come off the gas lift. This may take a few hits.
3. Detach the old gas lift from the seat mechanism
It’s usually held in by friction — a few firm taps from underneath (e.g., using a block of wood) should release it.
4. Insert the new gas lift
Place the new cylinder into the seat mechanism and reattach the base.
5. Set the chair upright and sit on it
Your weight will help secure all parts firmly in place. Done! Your chair is back in action.
💡 Pro Tip:
Always check the height of the new gas lift before installation. If it’s too tall, especially in children’s chairs or those with small bases, it may reduce stability and increase the risk of tipping.
